About the Services

All services are conducted in English with a generous amount of Hebrew and much singing. On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services are led by Rabbi Karen Bookman Kaplan and Beverly Myers, cantorial soloist, accompanied by our pianist David Deschamps and the Beth Am Choir. During the rest of the year members of the congregation serve as cantor accompanied by David Deschamps. The choir also sings on some holidays and Shabbat services.

Rabbi Kaplan leads Festival and shabbat services, usually two Friday evenings and one shabbat morning. Beth Am has a long tradition of services led by members, which is continued on the weeks when the rabbi is not in the pulpit.

Shabbat Services

*** September through June
Services are held every Friday night. Services begin at 8 pm except on the first Friday of each month (starting in November) when the service begins at 6 pm. On these evenings there is a Kabbalat Shabbat program for children ages 3 –10; and services are followed by a catered dinner.

Beginning in November, monthly Saturday morning services are held at 10:00 am, followed by a potluck dairy lunch. On some of these mornings, there is a Shabbat program for children. See Calendar for dates.

*** July and August
Friday evening services are conducted alternately at the Cornerstone Center and in members’ homes. These services are led by members of the congregation.

*** There are services on all Festivals.

See Calendar for details of services: date, time, Torah portion if appropriate, and who will lead the service.
